The following question was asked on Reddit:

I work until 4:00 on the weekdays and find that I am starving afterwards. I want to start an evening Bikram class once a week but I don’t want to over eat and eat nothing at all. What is something to eat that is good before Bikram that will fulfill my appetite a little and not make me too full? Also how much water should I drink?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Ultimately, your body requirements are highly unique (and they change day-to-day, and decade over decade). The over-aching suggestion is: experiment. Play with it. Try to avoid jumping to conclusions with limited data. And, when you think you reached a conclusion, try to avoid holding on to it too strongly. You might find that your food intake during the cold winter does not work the same during the hot summer, and your hydration needs in the middle of the humid monsoon is different in dry season!

as fast as your specific question and what munchies might work- how about some fruits or nuts 1-2 hours before class?

When I'm going to a 5:30 pm class I make sure I plan my nutrition as soon as I wake up! I drink water and have breakfast around 9 am making sure it's nutritious and not sugary. I usually eat an early lunch with lots of water intake and stop eating by 2:30pm. I've made the mistake of trying to pound water right before class or chow down an energy bar 15 min before class and realized what a HUGE mistake I've made when we do the first forward fold in half moon hands to feet. lol

I tell all my students that they are properly hydrated once their pee is pale yellow. I can tell with myself that if it’s not pale enough, I’m going to struggle because I’m not properly hydrated. As long as the pee is pale yellow, you are usually well hydrated. But it takes time to get there, you don’t want to be chugging water an hour or so before class.
And I agree with the above suggestion to play with the food in take and see what works and of course nothing too heavy. For me, if the timing is weird and I need to eat, I might do a Greek yogurt or protein smoothie 2-3 hours before class. Or maybe a banana or other fruit and some nuts an hour before. When I first started practicing though, I had a hard rule of no food 3-4 hours before class. Over the years I’ve been able to loosen that up. So definitely something to play with and will vary for each individual.
